When should I fertilise my rhododendron and which fertiliser should I use?

(Survey: Planting tips for rhododendrons )

Fertilise your rhododendron in April. Use granular fertilisers which gradually dissolve in water. This way, you will only need to fertilise your rhododendon once in springtime as there are enough fertilisers for the next six growth monts. Most garden centres offer special rhododendron fertilisers, enriched with magnesium or iron. Freferably, use a gradually dissolving and coated fertiliser: shell which gradually releases the fertilising granules. There are fertilsers which are active during 3, 4 or even 6 months (for example: Osmocote). Just make sure that all granules are inactive by September. In March, you can use a fertiliser which is active for 6 months, while in the month of May, it is best to use a fertiliser which is active for only 3 to 4 months. Your rhododendron can now harden in order to prevent young shoots to freeze off in case of night frost.
